BCBS of TN provider enrollment runs in three steps. You update your DataSpring (formerly CAQH) profile, register for EFT and ERA in Optum's Payer Enrollment Services (formerly Change Healthcare), then submit the enrollment application in Availity. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee lists those three steps on its own enrollment page.
The steps look short on paper. Most delays come from small details, like a CAQH attestation older than 90 days or the wrong form for your NPI type. One slip can cost you weeks of in-network billing.
Below you'll find the full BCBST process for 2026, from the documents to gather before you apply to the claim denials a weak file causes later. The credentialing team at MedSole RCM built it from BCBST's own BlueAlerts, manuals, and enrollment pages.

BCBST is one of the independent Blue plans, and each plan runs its own enrollment. If you also treat Blue members in other states, our guide to BCBS enrollment across 33 plans covers the other licensees.
What BCBST Requires Before You Apply
Strong BCBST enrollment files start before anyone opens Availity. BCBST's enrollment process infographic expects two things in place first: a current DataSpring profile and an EFT registration. Get both right, and the application step goes faster.
DataSpring (Formerly CAQH): The 90-Day Attestation Trap
CAQH ProView now runs under the DataSpring name, after CAQH announced its rebrand. BCBST still pulls your credentialing data from that profile. You complete it, upload your documents, attest, and grant BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee access to view it.
The trap sits in the timing. DataSpring asks for re-attestation every 120 days, yet BCBST wants the attestation no more than 90 calendar days old when you grant access. A profile that's current by DataSpring's clock can be stale by BCBST's, so re-attest on the day you authorize BCBST.
Our CAQH credentialing guide walks through profile setup, document uploads, and payer authorization step by step.
Documents to Have Ready
Gather these before you start. Each one feeds DataSpring, the EFT registration, or the Availity application.
- Individual NPI (Type 1) and, for groups, the group NPI (Type 2)
- Tax ID and a signed W-9 that matches your legal business name
- Active Tennessee license, plus DEA registration if you prescribe
- Current malpractice insurance face sheet
- Board certification, or education and training records
- Bank account details and a voided check for EFT
- Practice locations and the taxonomy code you'll bill under
Collecting all of this takes hours a busy front desk rarely has. MedSole's provider enrollment and credentialing services cover the collection step along with the filing itself, so BCBST receives a complete file.
How to Become a Blue Cross Blue Shield Provider in Tennessee: The 3-Step BCBST Process
BCBST's Enroll a Provider page lays out three steps, and the order matters. Each step depends on the one before it, so finish them in sequence.
Step 1: Update and Attest Your DataSpring Profile
Complete every section of your DataSpring profile, upload current documents, and attest. Then grant BCBST access. Keep your practice addresses, Tax ID, and NPI identical across DataSpring and Availity. Two versions of the same address give a reviewer a reason to stop and ask.
Step 2: Register for EFT and ERA in Optum Payer Enrollment Services
BCBST has required EFT registration before enrollment since September 2022. You register through Optum's Payer Enrollment Services at payerenrollservices.com, the portal formerly run under the Change Healthcare name. Use the Tax ID and bank account the practice will receive payments under.
Set up ERA in the same session. Electronic remittances let your billing team post BCBST payments automatically from the first paid claim, with no paper EOBs to key in by hand.
Step 3: Submit the Application in Availity
Log in to Availity, open the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee payer space, and select the Provider Enrollment, Updates and Changes tile. Choose your provider type and the request type for a new enrollment. Complete the form, including the networks you want to join.
Submit one application per provider. BCBST warns that multiple applications slow its review, so a second application filed to speed things up does the opposite.
Which BCBS of TN Provider Enrollment Form to Use: PEF or GEF
Your NPI setup decides the form. BCBST's March 2023 BlueAlert draws a clear line between the two, and it rejects the wrong one.

What Happens After You Submit: BCBST's 6 Enrollment Stages
BCBST moves each application through six stages, according to its enrollment infographic, and some run at the same time. Knowing the stages tells you where a stalled file is sitting.
- Intake audit: BCBST checks the application for completeness.
- Credentialing: BCBST verifies your credentials and DataSpring data.
- Contracting: you and BCBST execute the provider agreement.
- Enrollment audit: BCBST reviews the file before loading it.
- Provider enrollment: BCBST loads you into its systems and networks.
- eCommerce: electronic transactions, including EFT and ERA, go live.
Credentialing, Contracting, and Enrollment Are Separate Steps
Many practices treat the credentialing approval letter as the finish line. BCBST treats it as stage two of six. The credentialing approval date is not your network participation date, so confirm your effective date before you schedule BCBST patients as in-network.

How Long BCBS of Tennessee Credentialing Takes
BCBST's stated goal is to complete the enrollment process within 45 business days. That's about nine weeks from a complete application. Missing documents and slow answers to requests for information add to it.

Use Tennessee's 90-Day Rule Before a New Provider Starts
Tennessee law works in your favor here. Under Tenn. Code Ann. § 56-7-1001, insurers must accept a credentialing application up to 90 days before a provider's start date. A 90-day head start covers BCBST's full 45-business-day goal with room to spare, so file as soon as the provider signs.
Can You Bill BCBST While Credentialing Is Pending?
You can submit the claim, but payment isn't guaranteed. The same statute allows insurers to deny claims submitted while a credentialing application is pending. Hold BCBST claims for a new provider until you have an effective date, then file inside the timely filing window.
How to Check Your BCBS of TN Provider Enrollment Status in Availity
BCBST publishes the exact path in its June 2025 BlueAlert. Check the tracker before you call. It's faster than waiting on hold.
- Log in to Availity.
- Select the Provider Enrollment, Updates and Changes tile on the Home page.
- Choose Individual or Group.
- Select Track a Request under Request Type.
- Pick your organization from the dropdown by Tax ID.
- Review the results in the Provider Enrollment Tracker.
A pending status with a request for information needs a fast reply. BCBST says the sooner you send the requested items, the sooner it can finish your review.
How You'll Know You're Credentialed and Active
A completed request in the tracker is your first signal. Confirm your effective date at 1-800-924-7141 or Contracts_Reqs_GM@bcbst.com, the contacts BCBST lists for enrollment status and contracts. Then check that you appear in the provider directory under each network you joined.
Which BCBST Networks You're Joining: Network P, S, L, E, and More
BCBST groups its provider networks by line of business. Your application lists the networks you want, and each one counts on its own. Joining one network doesn't place you in the rest.

BCBST Network S vs P
BCBST's Provider Administration Manual says Network S uses a smaller network of providers than Network P in most Tennessee markets. Membership in P doesn't put you in S. A Network S member who sees a provider contracted only in P is seeing an out-of-network provider, so learn which networks your local employers' plans use before you choose.
The Behavioral Health Comprehensive Network
Behavioral health follows its own rule. BCBST's June 2026 BlueAlert says providers in its BH Comprehensive Network count as in-network for any member with a commercial plan, across Networks P, S, L, and E.
The catch shows up in multi-specialty groups. BCBST gives the example of a group contracted in Network P plus the BH network. Its behavioral health clinicians are in-network for a Network S member, while its medical providers are out of network for that same member.
Two more network rules affect your patient base. Marketplace members have no out-of-network benefits, per BCBST's November 2024 BlueAlert, so missing their network means losing those patients. BlueCare Plus providers also complete Model of Care training after contracting and every year after that.
BlueCare Tennessee Provider Enrollment: The Separate TennCare Track
BlueCare Tennessee serves TennCare members, and it adds a step commercial enrollment doesn't have. Every provider who requests or provides services for BlueCare members must register for a Tennessee Medicaid ID through the Division of TennCare's provider registration portal.
BCBST asks providers to allow 7 to 10 business days for that Medicaid ID to reach BlueCare Tennessee. The requirement covers each provider named on a BlueCare claim. On institutional claims, that includes the billing, attending, operating, and rendering providers.
Plan the order: TennCare registration first, BlueCare enrollment second. Our Tennessee Medicaid enrollment guide covers the TennCare side in detail. For BlueCare provider questions, call 1-800-468-9736.
Groups, Facilities, and Changes After You're Enrolled
Getting enrolled starts a maintenance job. BCBST expects your data to stay current, and several of its rules carry payment consequences if you miss them.
Facilities and Ancillary Providers
Facilities and ancillary providers follow a different path from individual practitioners. Start by contacting a BCBST Provider Network Representative instead of the online practitioner application. BCBST's Network Managers cover all 95 Tennessee counties.
Updates Go Through DataSpring and Availity
Since September 1, 2024, BCBST no longer accepts emailed copies of any document you can update in CAQH. Make credentialing and recredentialing updates in DataSpring and attest them. Practice changes, such as a new location or a departing provider, go through the Availity change form.
Credentialing questions go by email only to Credentials@bcbst.com, a rule in place since January 1, 2025. Send them there instead of calling the enrollment line.
Change of Ownership Requires 60 Days' Notice
Buying or selling a practice triggers BCBST's change of ownership rules. Give at least 60 days' advance notice and submit the Provider Change of Ownership Notification Form. After closing, send the executed bill of sale, minus the purchase price, within five business days. Missing either step can affect your payments.
Monthly Exclusion Screening
BCBST requires providers to screen employees and contractors before hiring and every month after that. The November 2024 BlueAlert lists seven sources to check:
- HHS-OIG List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE)
- System for Award Management (SAM)
- Tennessee Abuse Registry
- Tennessee Felony Offender Registry
- National and Tennessee sex offender registries
- Social Security Death Master File
- Tennessee Terminated Providers List

Each new provider who joins your group needs a BCBST enrollment of their own. MedSole's BCBS credentialing support prices every one the same way, at $99 per insurance, with weekly follow-up until BCBST decides. |

One correction to search results. Some summaries list 1-800-332-5762 as a BCBST provider enrollment number. That's the BlueCare Plus member enrollment line, so a provider who calls it about an application lands in the wrong queue.
BCBST Enrollment Mistakes That Turn Into Claim Denials
Enrollment mistakes rarely stay on the application. They show up months later as rejected or denied claims, and these six cause the most trouble.
- Billing before your effective date. Tennessee law lets insurers deny claims submitted while credentialing is pending, and services before your network effective date aren't in-network.
- Taxonomy mismatches. BCBST requires billing and rendering taxonomy codes to match how you're credentialed and contracted. It says NPPES shouldn't be your only source, and BCBST can reject, deny, or reduce payment on mismatched claims.
- Group number entered as the requesting provider. On high-tech imaging authorization requests, BCBST says group numbers display as out of network. Enter the individual provider number instead.
- Missing Medicaid ID on BlueCare claims. Each provider named on a BlueCare claim needs a Tennessee Medicaid ID, as covered above.
- Wrong payer ID. Use the BCBST payer ID below and confirm it with your clearinghouse.
- Disputes sent the old way. Since April 1, 2026, BCBST accepts inquiries, reconsiderations, and appeals only through its Availity claims dispute tool. Fax, mail, and email no longer work, for in-network providers and for out-of-network providers with a Tennessee practicing address.
Once denials start stacking, each one needs a fix at the source plus a corrected claim. Our denial management services handle both for practices that can't spare the staff hours.
What Is the BCBS Tennessee Payer ID?
BCBST's September 2024 BlueAlert lists the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee payer ID as 00390. Some clearinghouses assign their own internal IDs, so confirm the value your clearinghouse expects before you submit.
Filing deadlines matter as much as routing, especially if you held claims for a pending provider. Check current limits in our guide to BCBS timely filing limits before you release them.
Getting Help With BCBS of TN Provider Enrollment
Plenty of practices file BCBST enrollment in-house without trouble. Others are onboarding several providers at once, or they've already lost weeks to a rejected PEF. Outsourcing pays off once your staff time costs more than the fee.
MedSole RCM handles BCBST credentialing at $99 per insurance. We file within 48 hours of receiving complete documents and follow up with the payer weekly until it decides. If the payer denies the application, MedSole's refund policy returns the fee.
That's the lowest published per-payer price among the 10 companies in our review of the best medical credentialing companies, as of October 2026. Only one other company on that list publishes a per-payer price, and its range starts at $300 per network.
Once you're enrolled, the same team can run your claims. MedSole offers medical billing at 2.99% of monthly collections with no setup fees. Your billing cost moves with your revenue, in all 50 states.

BCBST is rarely the only payer on a new provider's list. Send MedSole the full roster, and the math stays simple: $99 for each insurance you add. |
BCBS of TN Provider Enrollment FAQs
How do I enroll as a provider with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee?
Enrollment takes three steps. Update and attest your DataSpring (formerly CAQH) profile, then grant BCBST access within 90 days of attesting. Register for EFT and ERA in Optum's Payer Enrollment Services. Finally, submit the Availity application under the Provider Enrollment, Updates and Changes tile, using the PEF or GEF that fits your NPI type.
Do I apply to BCBST through Availity?
Yes. BCBST takes new provider applications and change requests through Availity, under the Provider Enrollment, Updates and Changes tile. You'll need an Availity account first. BCBST also asks for a current DataSpring profile and a completed EFT registration before you submit, so finish those two steps first.
Is EFT required for BCBS of TN provider enrollment?
Yes. BCBST has required EFT registration before enrollment since September 2022. Register through Optum's Payer Enrollment Services, the portal formerly operated under the Change Healthcare name. Set up ERA at the same time, so payments and remittances arrive electronically from your first paid claim.
How long does BCBS of TN provider enrollment take?
BCBST's goal is 45 business days, about nine weeks, from a complete application. Tennessee law requires a credentialing decision within 90 days of a clean CAQH application. Incomplete files push both timelines out. Insurers must accept applications up to 90 days before a provider's start date, so file early.
What is the BCBS of Tennessee payer ID?
BCBST's September 2024 BlueAlert lists the payer ID as 00390. Clearinghouses sometimes assign their own internal IDs for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, so confirm the value yours expects. Since April 1, 2026, claim inquiries, reconsiderations, and appeals go only through the Availity claims dispute tool.
Is BCBS of Tennessee the same as Anthem?
No. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and the Blue plan for Tennessee. Anthem runs Blue plans in other states. Tennessee providers enroll with BCBST, and claims for members of other Blue plans generally go through BCBST under the BlueCard program.
How do I enroll in BlueCare Tennessee (TennCare)?
Register for a Tennessee Medicaid ID on the Division of TennCare's provider registration site first. BCBST says to allow 7 to 10 business days for that ID to reach BlueCare Tennessee. Then select BCBST's government networks in your Availity application. Every provider named on a BlueCare claim needs a Medicaid ID.
How do I know if I'm credentialed with BCBST?
Open the Provider Enrollment Tracker in Availity: select the Provider Enrollment, Updates and Changes tile, choose Individual or Group, select Track a Request, and pick your Tax ID. Credentialing approval alone doesn't put you in network. Confirm your network effective date at 1-800-924-7141 before you bill BCBST patients as in-network.
What's the difference between BCBST Network S and Network P?
Both are BCBST commercial networks. BCBST's Provider Administration Manual says Network S uses a smaller network of providers than Network P in most Tennessee markets. Participation in one doesn't make you in-network for the other, so a provider contracted only in Network P is out of network for a Network S member.
Who can handle BCBS of TN provider enrollment for my practice?
MedSole RCM files BCBST applications at $99 per insurance, submits within 48 hours of complete documents, and follows up with BCBST weekly until a decision. The fee comes back if the payer denies the application. MedSole also offers medical billing at 2.99% of monthly collections with no setup fees, across all 50 states.
